In Memory of James Melton Mullis, Sr. — MC MULLEN FUNERAL HOME, Columbus, GA

James Melton Mullis, Sr., 85, of Columbus, GA died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home.Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 21, 2012 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend John Fugh, Jr. officiating. A private interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907.

Mr. Mullis was born September 9, 1926 in Columbus, GA son of the late James Jackson Mullis and Lizzie Mae Ward Mullis. He served in the Maritime Service and Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1945 and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired from The Central of Georgia Railroad as a clerk. He later worked for AFLAC in Sales as the District Manager. He also worked as an insurance agent for other insurance companies. He was a member of the Columbian Lodge #7 for 59 years, Columbus Scottish Rite for 36 years, Al-Sihah Temple for 35 years, and the Columbus-Ft. Benning Shrine Club for 33 years. He was also a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, past member of the Evening Optimist Club, and BSA Scout Master of Troup #6. He graduated from Jordan High School and Perry Business College.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his former spouse, Mary Ruth Huff Mullis, brother, W.T. Mullis, and sister, Ethel Parker.Survivors include his wife, Mabel Proctor Mullis of Columbus, GA, sons, James M. Mullis, Jr. of Athens, GA, Edward F. Mullis of Columbus, GA, daughter, Cornelia Mullis Young (Billy) of Columbus, GA, grandchildren, Michael A. Smith, Holly Marie Mullis, Cheryl Ann Mullis and Logan Ogletree all of Columbus, GA, one great grandchild, Brielle Smith of Virginia, and four stepchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Shrine Club 3202 Edgewood Rd. Columbus, GA 31907 and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children 2900 Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL 33607 or call (813) 241-GIFT.
