Allen Jr., Hiram Sanders

COLUMBIA — Services for Hiram Sanders “H.S.” Allen, Jr., 85, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church with burial following in Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by Reverend John W. Culp and directed by Shives Funeral Home of Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 15, 2007, at the funeral home on Colonial Drive in Columbia. Memorials may be made to Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church of Columbia or the Alzheimer’s Association-Palmetto Chapter.


Mr. Allen died Saturday, October 13, 2007. Born January 1, 1922, in Norway, SC, and raised on the family farm in Blythewood, SC, he was the son of Hiram Sanders and Annie Lou Williams Allen.


He graduated from Blythewood High School in 1938 and attended Clemson College, which he loved dearly. During his working years, he was employed by Central Chevrolet, Edens Trucking and Love Chevrolet. In 1969 he went into business for himself as owner of Seven Oaks Exxon on St. Andrews Road. The business expanded to include a second location, a U-Haul franchise, and a towing operation until 1992.


He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Wright Allen, in 2003. Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Hiram and Lawanda Allen of Mesa, Arizona, Kellum and Jane Allen of West Columbia; daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Mel Coker of Chapin; sister, Mrs. Ann A. Mullis of Blythewood; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


The family would like to express its gratitude to the caregivers at Oakleaf Village of Lexington, Lexington Extended Care at Carroll Campbell Place, Hospice Care of Tri County, and most especially, Sibble J. Brooks.
