Hattie was the daughter of John H. Mullis and Martha Alice Hendrix.
She graduated from Meredith College in 1934, and began her teaching career as a kindergarten instructor in her home and at Calvary Baptist Church. She later taught at the N.C. School for the Deaf for 20 years.
Hattie was a member of the Morganton Pilot Club, and started the Anchor Club at Morganton High School. As a member of AARP, she helped start the Home Bound program through the Morganton Department of Public Safety.
She was a member of the Morganton Downtown Revitalizaton Committee and was a volunteer with the Historic Morganton Festival. She was an usher at CoMMA, a member of the Friday Afternoon Book Club, and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, helped with the Soup Kitchen at Burke United Christian Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, and Cub Scouts at NCSD.
