McCray, Ronald Pierce

Services for Ronald Pierce McCray, 66, of Thomasville, are 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home Chapel.


Elder Terry Barnard will officiate and interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.


Active pallbearers will be members of the Thomasville Fire Department.


Mr. McCray died Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Plantation Manor in Thomasville after a lengthy illness. Born June 13, 1943, in Thomas County, he was the son of the late Oscar Pierce McCray and Verta Daniell McCray, who survives.


He received his education in the Thomasville public schools and graduated in 1962. He attended Massey Technical College in Jacksonville, Fla., taking a course in drafting.


He met and married Mary Elizabeth Mullis April 17, 1965, in Jacksonville, Fla., and she preceded him in death on Aug. 12, 2000.


He returned to Thomasville in 1969. He worked for the Thomasville Fire Department from 1970 to 1998 and retired as a lieutenant after 28 years. He worked for Harveys Super Market part-time. He was a member of Thomasville Primitive Baptist Church.


Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Jackson and son-in-law David Jackson of Thomasville; grandson Brandon Kent and granddaughter Noelle Kent of Thomasville; mother, Verta Daniell McCray of Thomasville; uncle, Lee Reid Daniell of Blackshear; sister-in-law, Ellen Hersey of Valdosta; and, a number of cousins and friends.


The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. — Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home
