Mint Hill resident Jerry Mullis was elected chairman of the Mint Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service by department members on Monday evening.

He succeeds Troy Pollard who has served as the chairman of the department for the past 15 years. Pollard was nominated for another term, but declined the nomination placing Mullis’s name in nomination instead.

Mullis has been a member of the department for 49 years. During that time he’s served in various capacities, including chief. He has also served as secretary and vice chairman of the board.

Pollard says he is confident that he is leaving the department in good hands and is excited that he will now be able to consider other opportunities for public service.

As chairman, Mullis will be responsible for the board of directors that governs the 70 member department which covers Mint Hill and the surrounding area. Last year the department responded to 2,932 calls for service – both fire and EMS.

Says Mullis, “I’m excited about serving the citizens of the Mint Hill community and I look forward to leading the department in 2010.”
