THEY’LL WIND UP FOR WINGATE – FOREST HILLS PITCHER MILLS, SOUTH ROWAN’S MULLIS SIGN LETTERS

A Forest Hills High School baseball standout is one of two right-handed pitchers to sign athletic scholarship agreements with Wingate University.

Chris Mills, who helped pitch Forest Hills to the state 3A baseball championship, signed recently with the Bulldogs. Also signing is Jonathan Mullis, from South Rowan High.Mills compiled a 10-1 record pitching for a Forest Hills team that went 22-4. He also played soccer at Forest Hills, earning all-conference honors. In youth baseball, he was a member of Babe Ruth All-Star teams that won state championships.

“We expect him to challenge for a significant role on our pitching staff,” Wingate baseball coach Bill Nash said of Mills. “Both (assistant) coach (Paul) Knight and I feel his best days are ahead. He has a tremendous character.”

Nash said Mills might be the first former Wingate University youth baseball camp participant to sign with the school.

Mullis played baseball and football at South Rowan, earning all-Central Piedmont 4A Conference honors in each sport. In 1996, his American Legion baseball team won the state and regional championships and placed third in the American Legion World Series.

“Jonathan is a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher,” Nash said. “He was a big part of the rotation of a very good South Rowan program and a very good Rowan County American Legion program.”
