Privacy Statement

Effective January 1, 2023

Who are we?

OurBigClan.com is a small, independent, non-commercial, and privately run family history site.

Site Purpose

The purpose of this site is to document and publish online the genealogy of the families shown throughout this site and within the family database. We research and record the life of individuals and families. We share that information with family members.  We publish the data to benefit other family members and family history researchers in the hope that they may contact us with more information.

Transparency

We attempt to be transparent in the way we process your personal information and that of living family members. If you have concerns or questions that aren’t addressed elsewhere in this document, please use the Contact form in the menu above to let us know.

Privacy

The US has no privacy laws in places like the EU GDPR and Data Privacy regulations. In Europe, privacy laws are interpreted by many genealogy sites as referring exclusively to the relationship between the site’s data controller and the people registered to use their site.  I am adopting those rules for this site, in order for family members to trust this site.

There is a large group of living subjects in our database, this Privacy Statement is to address them.

Our family tree would be severely diminished if it did not include the latest generations, so this site contains details of living people.  Their details are not displayed to people who access the site anonymously, and login is only available to family members and researchers who subscribe and are manually approved by the site administrator.

Personal information of living family members

If you want to see, edit, or delete information in the family tree that relates to your family’s living members, the most effective way is to register as a member of the site after which you will be able to access and request edit or deletion of the records yourself.

If you would prefer not to have to edit the data yourself we can provide you with a guest login that will let you view the information we hold.  If you are unhappy about any aspect of it you can use the Contact form in the menu above to tell us about it.

Cookies

This website uses cookies. Cookies do not harm your computer and do not contain viruses. They are small text files that are stored on your computer by your browser and perform important functions in the operation of this site.

Most of the cookies we use are “session cookies”. They are automatically deleted when you close your browser. Other cookies remain stored on your device until you delete them. These cookies allow us to recognize your browser the next time you visit and restore some of your preferences (such as your preferred language).

You can configure your browser settings so that you are informed about the setting of cookies and allow cookies only in certain cases. Disabling cookies will limit the functionality of this website.

What happens when you block cookies

The two most visible outcomes from blocking cookies are:

  1. You will be unable to login successfully because your login details are normally stored in a cookie.  You will be treated as an anonymous browser and access to the records of living people will be denied.
  2. The GDPR cookie consent and privacy preferences footer bar will appear on every page you visit because your GDPR consent status would normally be stored in some of the blocked cookies.   On every page, you will be treated as a new visitor, and Agreeing to or Dismissing the cookie consent bar will have no effect.

Contact form

If you send us inquiries via the contact form, the personal details and the inquiry will be stored in order to process the request and in case of follow-up questions.  We will not share this data with third parties.

Advertising

This site is privately funded and uses no commercial advertising. This means we do not share your personal data with any advertisers.

Analytics

We use no analytics on this site.

Changes to this Statement

Changes to this statement will occur from time to time as we update policies or any laws change.
