Richard Phaney Mullis, age 88 of the Milltown Community of Robbinsville, NC passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at his residence.
Richard was the fourth of four children born to the late Thomas C. and Mary Jane Hager Mullis.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sisters, Lillian Mullis Gamble, and Ruby Mullis Johnson; brother, Lewis C. Mullis; and a son Larry Rogers.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vera Stratton Mullis and son Eddie Rogers of Robbinsville, NC; nieces, Jerrie Butler of Greenwood, SC, Carole Hicks of Greenville, SC, Susan Bodie of Waxhaw, NC; nephew Harley Gamble, Jr. of Monroe, NC; grandchildren, Richard Rogers, Marie Rogers; great grandchildren, Brenden Cole, Karee Beth Cole, and Kristen Rogers. Several great nieces and nephews also survive, Jan, Doug, Debbie, Donnie, Melissa, Mandy, Sarah, David, and Kimberley.
Richard served in both WWII and the Korean War. He reached the Rank of Staff Sgt. Serving in the United States Army. He served in Europe in an administrative position on the Eisenhower/Omar Bradley Staff. After discharge from active duty Richard attended UNC-Chapel Hill for 5 years taking courses to enhance his education. Richard was fluent in Spanish and German. Richard became interested in golf at an early age and worked at Augusta, the home of the Masters. He attended the event for 45 years not missing an event. Richard’s career was in sales and expanded 25 years and 5 states as a Mfg. Representive for various companies.
Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Townson-Smith Chapel. Marty Maxwell will officiate with music provided by Bobby and Zelda Odom.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 till 7:00 pm Thursday at the Chapel prior to the service. Committal Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Old Mother Church Cemetery where Flag Presentation and Military Rites will be conducted by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard and the Carringer Webster VFW Post #8635 and the Eller Rogers American Legion Post #192.
