Mr. Starret Worth Mullis, 91, died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
He was born August 1, 1923 in Troutdale, VA, a son to the late R.D. Mullis and Mary Pennington Mullis, and grew up in Lansing, NC. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Mullis in 2009, a daughter, Julie Beth Mullis in 1986, brother, Dale Mullis at war in 1945, sister, Wave Roten in 1987, and brother, Stuart Mullis in 2014.
After graduating from Lansing High School, He served in World War II in Europe in the 30th Infantry Division. Upon his return he went to work for Western Electric where he was employed for 38 years until he retired in 1983.
On July 9, 1960, he married the former Pauline Gertrude Burke. They were married for 49 and a half years until her death in 2009. For many years he was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a Deacon. For the last several years he was a member of Northwest Baptist Church where, though he was unable to attend, he was made to feel very welcome.
He loved the outdoors, and fishing especially. Growing up and as a young man he enjoyed fishing the New River for trout. In his retirement he enjoyed making several fishing trips a year to the coast. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, and spent many hours watching Atlanta Braves baseball and Wake Forest basketball. For the last fifteen years his greatest enjoyment was his grandchildren.
Starret is survived by his son, The Reverend Brad Mullis and wife, Ellyn of Statesville; grandchildren Sally Margaret and Charles Starret; two sisters, Marie Gregg of Atlanta, Ga and Lorene Adams of Aberdeen, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 PM, Tuesday, September 23rd, at Northwest Baptist Church with Pastor Ellen Strickland officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday, September 22nd from 6 until 8 PM, at Frank Vogler and Sons Funeral Home Reynolda Chapel.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Starret’s caregiver Prudence Belcher, for all the care, love, and support given to him over the last four years.
