Charlotte – Six men will be given a hearing in Mecklenburg County Recorder’s Court March 7 on charges growing out of the burning of a cross at the home of a Negro candidate for the Board of County Commissioners.
The youths were arrested yesterday and charged with forcible tresspassing on the property of Lem Long Jr. where a crude cross was burned Feb. 25. Police termed the incident a prank.
Arrested were William Hugh Mullis, 18, Boyce Reid Mullis, 17, brothers of Rt. 1 Charlotte; Alfed Leonard Mullis, 17, Arvin Delroe Hargett, 18, Edward Harry Mullis, 17, and Robert Lee Mullis, 20, all of Rt. 3 Matthews.
The defendants posted bond of $500 each.
